LODO--Lower Downtown Denver - home to Larimer Square, the Colorado Convention Center, and Coors Field
The 23-square block area of Lower Downtown, or LoDo as the residents of Denver affectionately call it, marks the origin of the city. In 1858, General William Larimer built his cabin and declared it Denver City, named after the governor of the Kansas territory, and within 25 years, Denver grew to become a major city in the country.
The LoDo neighborhood was declared a historic district in 1988 and today gives protection to over 100 historic buildings. Nowadays, there is no shortage of things to do in Lower Downtown: Shoppers will love the wealth of stores and boutiques, especially in Larimer Square (the place where Denver City was truly founded). For art lovers, the galleries offer a colorful array of activities. History buffs will enjoy a tour through Denver's U.S. Mint. For entertainment, there is jazz and blues, rock and roll, comedy and musical theater. For dining, the multitude of restaurants features all manner of cuisine. For health nuts, the walking and biking trails along Cherry Creek and the Platte River are only steps away. Anchoring the east end of LoDo is the Colorado Convention Center. And for sports fans, Coors Field, anchoring the west end and home to the Colorado Rockies, offers major league baseball with a major league backdrop.
16th Street Mall - A European-Style Pedestrian District
Trees now stand where cars used to run along this 16-block promenade that forms the heart of downtown Denver. The 16th Street Mall features fine restaurants, cafes and bars, plus outstanding shopping, anchored by the Tabor Center and the open-air Denver Pavilions, featuring some of the nation's top retail stores. And if you'd rather save your energy for shopping, the city offers the free 16th Street Mall shuttle service.
